Abstract

This capstone examines the literature on treatment of children who have experienced complex trauma; specifically, the repeated maltreatment from an attachment figure. It explores how ongoing adverse experiences in childhood affect various aspects of a student's life including school performance, social-emotional well-being, and self-esteem. Across a developmental trajectory, complex trauma and its emotional and physical reactions will be addressed. The positive effects and unique advantages of art therapy are outlined; and implications for these findings are discussed in terms of art-based therapeutic interventions for elementary school counsellors to use to address the needs of students with complex trauma.
