Abstract

The purpose of this project is to raise awareness of the collaborations that are occurring between museums and dance organizations in the United States, to provide a tool for museum educators and dance educators to create more such programs, and to further sustain these collaborations. I define a dance organization as any professional, semi-professional, or dance studio that educates and performs for their local community ballet, contemporary, tap, or modern dance Through a review of the available literature, I identified elements for creating a successful collaboration between museums and dance organizations that serves local communities, expands the possibilities of both the museum and dance organization, and promotes an appreciation for the arts. I then analyzed whether these characteristics are consistent with the current collaboration practices that are occurring in dance organizations and museums. An analysis of "best practice" elements serves to inform both museums and dance organizations on how to sustain those collaborations that are already occurring and what is important to consider with the creation of a new collaboration. The goal of this study is to raise awareness that collaborations are occurring between museums and dance organizations in the United States, to provide a tool for museum educators and dance educators, and to promote the creation and sustainability of these collaborations.
