Abstract
The present investigation was an attempt to learn how involved the developmentally disabled are in deciding where they work and live. Also, how do they feel about the non-disabled population? This study was done with two groups of seven clients in the same area of California. One group worked under constant supervision and the other worked under partial supervision. A questionnaire was designed for the survey. The findings suggest that most of the developmentally disabled do not participate in the making of their future. The findings also revealed that the majority of the developmentally disabled feel biased toward the staff. This population needs to be taught how to voice their opinions and to be involved in choosing their jobs as well as in more social activities within the community. The community needs to be taught to include the developmentally disabled in these decisions. The conclusions of this study provide suggestions for additional training of the workforce of the Rehabilitation Department and affiliated non-profit organizations as well as for the mentally disabled.
