Abstract
This study explored ways that collaborative musical experiences can serve as a path to finding commonality and connections between diverse individuals and groups. An examination of relevant literature provided information about the characteristics of creative and innovative organizational relationships, as well as examples of music ensembles as metaphors for life in community. In addition, ethnographic data was gathered to examine the specific experiences and personal reflections of singers participating in a collaborative concert series called Classics!! between the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus and WomenSing, a women's chorus based in Orinda. These two independent community choruses formed one chorus for the series, in order to have a musical experience that would not otherwise be possible for either group.
