Abstract
In this thesis, the benefits that can be realized when treatment centers use Expressive Arts Therapy with their substance abuse population are enumerated. To gather data on the effectiveness of Expressive Arts Therapy, a one-hour workshop for project directors, staff, and residents/outpatients was given at five treatment centers. At the end of each workshop, a questionnaire was handed out to the participants and the results were later analyzed. Ninety-five percent of the participants agreed that Expressive Arts enabled them to get in touch with their feelings and that it was beneficial. According to the program directors, however, at the present time, such therapy cannot be included in their program schedules because of severe financial constraints. The thesis concludes with some practical recommendations of how treatment centers might fit an Expressive Arts program into their current budgets.
