First responders have been treated as a homogenous group in terms of their treatment for work related post-traumatic stress disorder. Females fell through the gaps of research when it came to studying the efficacy of treatments and therapies for remedying the symptoms that came along with experiencing trauma within their work. As such, this capstone paper looks to extrapolate the modalities that have helped females who have experienced forms of trauma from other sources as well as females with military backgrounds that parallel the paramilitary style of first responder work. The traditionally used therapeutic approaches such as EMDR, exposure therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy are explored as well as other less researched and emerging approaches such as yoga, acceptance commitment therapy, female-led support groups, and psychedelics. Synthesizing the current research in the field, a trauma-informed multi-pronged holistic approach is examined for counsellors to apply within their practice with this population.
