Abstract
This thesis explores the connection between family of origin and romantic relationships. My interest is to review the practice of couples counselling in relation to family of origin, trans-generational beliefs, attachment, the effects of divorce, the effects of affairs, and Gottmanās work regarding raising the emotionally intelligent child. My research leads to recommendations about what therapists should be mindful of when working with couples to explore the connection between family of origin and their marital experience. This thesis consists of a literature review, fictional case examples, my personal story, discussion and recommendations for counsellors. The City University of Seattle Institutional Review Board approval was obtained prior to collecting data for this study to ensure that the study met ethical standards.
