The topic of this qualitative thesis is worthy of investigation because counselors engage in therapeutic relationships from the location of self. The childhood experience of witnessing violence is outlined and is supported by relevant research. Examples of service are discussed and situated within the context of loving-kindness practice. Other Buddhist concepts and teachings, and Christian and Taoist references, are cited. Recording family history is one way to prevent it being lost and may serve as intergenerational therapy. Stylistic elements from heuristic inquiry and autoethnography were used throughout this non-traditional thesis intended for publication. Personal poems and photographs are included to complement narrative material.
