Abstract

The goal of this master's project is to develop a detailed, viable business plan for the development of a new museum devoted to the sporting traditions of the San Francisco Bay Area. This institution, with the working title of the Bay Area Museum of Sport (BAMS), does not currently exist. The intent of the project goes beyond the development of a purely theoretical business plan, being focused on creating a plan that can be applied to the establishment of a Bay Area Museum of Sport. A business plan is essentially an organized, logical way to view all of the important aspects of a business or organization. The value of a plan is that it influences and guides key decisions during the course of the implementation of a project. A well researched, clearly written plan with concrete objectives provides a blueprint for an organization to follow. A business plan needs to be regularly reviewed and occasionally revised. Another important reason to create a plan, particularly for a new organization, is to provide potential donors, staff, board members, and volunteers a detailed vision of the organization. For a fledgling concept like BAMS, a business plan is the most effective means to define goals, strategies and values.
