Abstract
The art of healing has always gone hand in hand with the current philosophical, social, and scientific progress of a given culture and time in history. At present, there is a major crisis in the health care system that seems to be a reflection of the general world crisis--international wars, social upheavals, and personal conflicts--currently raging all over the world. In this study, the principal problems around current health issues are explored, along with different approaches to their solution. In a selection of contemporary literature on health, the main points of criticism toward the traditional medical system are introduced. The critical voices of these writers also make up the background to the current trend of alternative solutions, as they have developed specifically in the Bay Area of California during the past couple of decades. The surveys of the study trace the developing interest in, and use of, holistic approaches for dealing with health problems, such as preventive measures and self-help, all the way to the cultivation of high-level wellness, as a new ideal standard.
