Abstract
The intention of this thesis exploration is to define and establish best collections management practices for small artist estates. Within the scope of artist estates and foundations there are a variety of institutions that operate at different professional and financial levels. For the purpose of this examination I only looked at Small Artist Estates (SAEs) and small Artist Endowed Foundations (AEFs). In this context, SAEs are defined as privately owned estates that promote the legacy of one person, where the proceeds directly benefit the family and or heirs of the estate, and the assets of said institutions do not exceed two million dollars. AEFs are defined as small-scale artist endowed foundations that manage the legacy of one or more artists, whose primary function is to provide philanthropic aid to the art community in the form of gifts, fellowships, or scholarships to artists or other arts organizations. While I focused more closely on SAEs it is impossible to study small, artist legacy - centric art institutions without considering AEFs. Both types of institutions have unique structures, collections, and budgeting concerns that differ from those of larger or mid-sized art institutions, and they are in need of established collections management guidelines that serve them specifically.
