Abstract

Description

The purpose of this master's project is to highlight the relationship between data management policies in museums and the preservation of institutional memory. This project examines the contributions of well—maintained databases to the achievement of a museum's mission. During the course of this project, I surveyed the creation, implementation and evolution of policies and procedures related to the various databases maintained throughout the different departments at the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA). I propose to create a clear model to create and implement database policies and procedures that are consistent throughout an organization. The ability to share data museum—wide allows for productive interdepartmental collaboration, communication and professional relationships. This will ultimately increase the ability of the museum to achieve mission—related goals, build effective community relationships, and preserve these achievements for future generations of museum employees.
