Abstract
This study explored whether female therapists of adult male clients feel devalued, and the consequences of such feelings of devaluation for both therapists and clients. Twenty therapists were interviewed to elicit their answers to a self-developed questionnaire. It was hypothesized that the therapists feel devalued, that anger is their reaction, and that nontherapeutic or inappropriate interventions could be the consequence. The three hypotheses were confirmed. In addition, it was found that the therapists exhibited ambivalence in their answers to the questionnaire. Possible reasons for the ambivalence of the therapists, issues in cross-sex therapeutic settings, and the need for consideration of gender as a variable affecting therapy are discussed.
