Abstract

For decades, science museums have created joint educational programs with numerous community-building agencies including schools, city governments, and local and national non-profit organizations. I decided to focus my research on relationships between science museums and local community-based organizations because of my past struggle to sustain a collaboration with a community-based organization and the lack of information I encountered when attempting to find professional museum resources regarding sustained community relationships. Interestingly, when researching museum-community relationships, I discovered that museum professional associations intentionally espoused a more general definition of community. Done in an effort to encourage museums to consider a vast potential of community partnerships, this decision created a void of relationship-specific resources. Therefore, much of my background information was based a broad definition of community relationships, and information that applied specifically to community-based organizations was noted accordingly.
