Abstract
For this essay, I have chosen to focus on Citigroup Inc., a diversified financial services holdings company with worldwide operations. In specific, the issue I want to focus on is executive compensation at Citigroup, Inc. Recent developments at Citigroup, with respect to the compensation package offered to its CEO Vikram Pandit, have re-opened the debate about excessive executive compensation and the commitment of many large corporations to equality and social responsibility.
This essay attempts to study the history of executive compensation, the extent of regulation that the US Government maintains over its corporate citizens, and the reason why executive compensation and corporate social responsibility is a sensitive issue during a stagnant economic period.
