Abstract

Amateur films, which were never intended to be preserved, are ephemeral evidence of America's past. This master's project focuses on history museums in the United States that have amateur films in their collections. For the purposes of this master's project, amateur films are defined as non-fiction factual films that depict real life. Examples include amateur documentaries, home movies, and promotional and advertising films. The purpose of my master's project is to create a guide to assist museum collections managers in caring for amateur film collections. The guide includes a glossary of terms, information on film format technology, copyright and access issues, and storage recommendations.
