Abstract
This study investigated the major factors enabling battered women to permanently leave their abusive relationship. Seventeen ex-battered women who had left their abusive relationship for at least a period of one year answered a questionnaire composed of 95 questions. Ten out of these 17 women participated in a two-hour individual audiotaped interview which was transcribed for analysis. The factors investigated as reasons for leaving their abusive relationship were: economic dependency, support from family and friends, legal and social help provided to battered women, safety of the children and concern for personal survival.
