Abstract

The goal of this catalogue is to present the collection of Chinese costumes at The Oakland Museum to the public for the first time, thereby documenting the wonderful clothing traditions of the Chinese both, prior to and after their immigration to California. The Chinese population of California, which numbers approximately three hundred twenty-two thousand, is one of the state's largest ethnographic groups. Their consistent aesthetic sensibilities of color, design, and embroidery are reflected through their dress. I believe the pieces of clothing in the collection at The Oakland Museum reflect these aesthetic standards and my job is to make this information available for the interested public: curators, students, historians, and for those who simply love fashion and textiles.
