Abstract

This thesis contends that a painting can depict recognizable objects without undermining Its abstractness. An Interior, a figure, a street scene, by virtue of palette, scale and point of view, can be Identified but not locked Into literalness. Color Is a major factor, as Is an exploration of design Inherent In nature. Layering, superimposition of visions and willful clumsiness can add a psychological dimension that Is the real subject of the work. Drawing Is Important whether in the form of accurately observed portrayal or emotional scribble. A domestic scale Is the arena, celebration of the ordinary Is the aim.
