Abstract

It is said that conflict is a part of everyone's life. It affects us in our personal and professional life and yet, conflict is a phenomenon that most people feel they could and would prefer to live their lives without. As organizational development consultants we will often enter organizations where conflict is occurring and it would therefore be helpful to understand how conflict affects individuals in organizations. Knowing how people experience conflict in the workplace will help develop a better approach to assisting with conflict resolution. This phenomenological study explored the impact of conflict on employees in the workplace and how this experience affected them. Researcher interviewed two individuals of different ethnic backgrounds, who work in different organizations. These individuals were asked to describe their experience of conflict in their organization. This study revealed if the experience of conflict was a positive or negative experience. And this study also revealed how organizational culture and/or ethnic background contribute to how one views conflict.
