Abstract
For my master's project, I gathered the best methods of caring for three-dimensional rod puppet collections in U.S. institutions, specifically addressing recommendations for optimal care in their storage environment. To examine this issue I sent out surveys to look at institutions around the country that have acquired this type of rod puppets; assess the various procedures used for storage care; and examine what protocols need to be considered when caring for primary wood objects in combination with other materials. I also presented case studies of three institutions in California that have collections of this type of puppet. These institutions comprised of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, the UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History, and the Conservatory of Puppet Arts/International Puppetry Museum in Pasadena. Based on these findings I compiled recommendations on techniques collections personnel can use to provide standardized care of three-dimensional rod puppets in storage. The rod puppets discussed comprises of primarily wood material but in combination with other materials such as metal and plastic.
