Abstract

The responses to projective stimuli of 18 children, five to ten years old, are examined to determine if there are differences in the responses of abused and non-abused children. The study was devised to assess whether projective story cards can elicit reliably different responses from nine children who have been documented as sexually abused, and a matched control group of nine children who have not been sexually abused. Eight picture cards that elicit themes of sexual abuse were chosen from the set of 25 "Projective Story Telling Cards" developed by Kent Caruso, PhD, and published by Northwest Psychological Publishers, Inc. Three raters were asked to rate each story of each child using qualitative and quantitative measures. The raters were unaware of which children had been sexually abused, which children had not been sexually abused, and the age, sex, and cultural background of the children.
