| dc.description.abstract | To set these three etchers in perspective, this paper will examine the history of etching in the San Francisco Bay Area. It will describe the periods of etching interest and activity and the periods of its decline. Furthermore, it will investigate the reasons for these cycles. Subjects included are the following: California etching in the late nineteenth century; the importance of Whistler's etchings as seen at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition; the decline of etching during the Depression years; the impact of the Works Progress Administration; the importance of displaced European artists who settled in the United States in the 1930's; and, finally, the print renaissance which began in the 1940's. | |
