Abstract
This manuscript thesis is about eating disorders. How does one distinguish between Anorexia, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, and Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified? What are some of the diagnostic criteria? Throughout this body of work I endeavor to explore the research and literature that surrounds and explains causality and then the treatment of these eating disorders. Taking a bio-psycho-social perspective, I distinguish how disordered eating should be considered from a multi-causal lens rather than a single-lens viewpoint. During the first part of the thesis I will examine the socio-cultural and neurobiological links to trauma, attachment, and addiction. Once I have examined the literature pertaining to this area of interest I will look into treatment of this pervasive mental illness. I will investigate and compare different treatment modalities for disordered eating. This research will illuminate the differences between Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, and pharmacological interventions used to treat the four types of eating disorders presented within the DSM–V (APA, 2013).
