Abstract
This study proposes a unifying description of the creative process based on the literature of creativity and the self-reports of creative people. It is a pilot study designed to: 1) provide an overview of how we view the creative process and
how we describe it; 2) verify the description from the literature through interviews with creative people about their personal processes; and 3) clarify definitions of the many ambiguous terms used in discussing the subject. The proposed description attempts to establish the parameters of the creative process, delineate relationships between known elements, and explain how these combine in the act of creating. This study also identifies times in the creative process when creative blocks are most likely to occur and suggests ways that the process can be enhanced.
