Abstract

The purpose of this master's project was to investigate how novices and more experienced viewers ("advanced amateurs") experience art and to produce a written report for dissemination to the field. Specifically, the study looked at the types of art experiences novices and advanced amateurs valued; the expectations they brought to an art museum experience; and their characteristic ways of looking at art. In the context of this study, "novices" were defined as adults who rated themselves as having moderate to high interest in art and low to moderate knowledge. "Advanced amateurs" were defined as visitors with a great deal of knowledge about art, who pursued their interest as an avocation versus a profession.
