Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the current exhibition conservation practices of small historical museums, to identify important problem areas that exist, and to make recommendations towards improvement of these specific exhibition conservation problems. To conduct this study, a survey questionnaire was developed and sent to selected representative small historical museums in eight western states.
The results of the study appear to indicate that the major exhibition conservation problems of small historical museums are directly related to the small staff size of these museums, as well as the lack of trained auxiliary staff personnel and volunteers. Based on the information gained from the survey, the author was able to make several nontechnical exhibition conservation recommendations for small historical museums including training programs for staff and volunteers, and recommendations to improve the exhibition environment for objects.
