My thesis examines the possibility of the existence of reincarnation and its possible purpose. In the first portion, Scientific Investigation, the phenomenon of the out-of-body experience (OBE), near-death experience (NDE), and past-life recall are researched, based on recent scientific study. Reincarnation, in theory, requires both the independence of consciousness from the physical body/brain and the continuity, in the stream of time, of consciousness beyond physical death. OBE and NDE indicate the former and past-life recall indicates both. Past-life recall phenomena, including xenoglossy, directly indicate .the existence of reincarnation. The second portion, Historical Investigation, reveals that the idea of reincarnation has been more universally accepted than we understand in today's world. This section indicates the history of the reincarnational beliefs and the reasons for its suppression mainly in the history of Christianity. The final portion explores the possible purpose of reincarnation, based on the examination of the experience of the "bright loving light" as seen in some NDEs. Some NDErs seen an amazingly bright and loving light during their experience. And, through seeing and communicating with the Light, the NDEr is transformed, drastically and fundamentally, which seems to have a positive affect on personality and on the person's understanding of life. The message of the "bright loving light" is meaningful, and conveys the basis purpose and meaning of life, often suggesting the existence of a cyclic pattern of physical life and death, called reincarnation. The Light emphasizes the importance of living unconditional love.
