Abstract
This essay is organized in three parts: the first describes the Allocation in general, its history and place in the SFMMA permanent collection; the second presents opinions on the influence of the WPA/FAP on American art as seen from both a 1930s and a contemporary perspective; and the third deals with the paintings and the artists in the exhibition. Each painting is discussed in terms of its composition and information relevant to the WPA/ FAP. Biographical material on each artist has been selected according to the following rationale: more background is given on the less famous artists, because it is more difficult for the reader to ferret out such information, e.g., one merely has to refer to any book on modern American art to read about Jack Levine, whereas this is not possible with William Sommer. The other area of emphasis in the biographical section is on information relevant to the artist's experience on the FAP.
