The standards for triage of care in pediatric oncology prioritize the need for safety and physical health. However, in this quest to ensure that the child's survival is a priority, the child's mental health may be impacted. With cancer treatments improving the rate of survival, many children are going through extensive therapies and treatments, which can impact their mental well-being, leading to increased anxiety, depression, feelings of hopelessness, and a decreased quality of life. Animal-assisted interventions (AAI) are becoming increasingly popular within the therapy realm, specifically in work that occurs with patients who have a cancer diagnosis. AAI has been generating research for many years; however, advanced technology and awareness have allowed the field to continue developing and adapting to meet the needs of this vulnerable population. AAI has been found to help decrease the physiological impact of stress and anxiety within individuals and is leading to increasing feelings of connection, safety, and community amongst children and families who are receiving treatment for a cancer diagnosis.
