Abstract
This thesis explores separation and reunification of family members in transnational families as they go through immigration processes, with a focus on how these processes affect the relationship between parents and their children. The separation and reunification processes are described as having a significant negative impact on the mental health of and relationships between parents and children in these families (Foner & Dreby, 2011; Mazzucato & Schans, 2008). A literature review and conceptual analysis methodology is utilized. Results indicated disruptions in parent-child-caregiver attachment that led to psychological distress; other researchers found resiliency in family members. The need for novice counsellors to better understand transnational families and the challenges they face as they separate and reunite is emphasized as crucial to their efforts to help these families. Areas in which further quantitative and qualitative transnational studies are needed are identified.
