dc.description.abstract | This thesis explores the possibility of the perception of future events through dream imagery, referred to as preparatory cognition. Three sources for its occurrence are examined: conscious anticipation, subliminal cues, and precognition. The historical traditions surrounding this phenomenon are presented as well as current literature and research related to this subject. A study of fourteen volunteers was implemented to record their dreams and corresponding events for a three-week period. This population consisted of three men and eleven women ranging in age from nineteen to forty-five years. They were all Caucasian and had received some college education. Each participant expressed a high interest ii'n dreams, although most had not kept ongoing dream journals. The three-week dream and event record they kept for this study was reviewed by two independent judges who determined if there was sufficient similarity between an event and a dream to form a correspondence. They found twenty-four dreams and events matched. These dreams were then categorized by the judges on the basis of whether they arose from conscious anticipation, subliminal cues, or precognition. Although the judges disagreed on the categories of fifteen of these dreams, they did concur that four were anticipatory, one was subliminal, and four were precognitive. The inclusion of precognitive dreams in these results provides some evidence that this phenomenon occurs more often than is generally recognized. The overall findings are consistent with historical and current literature in indicating that preparatory cognition is a factor in dream formation. The results of this pilot study have been used as the basis for recommendations for further clinical and experimental research. | |
