| dc.description.abstract | The How to Change Your Genes program was developed in order to fill a gap in holistic health education about epigenetics and to provide an opportunity for people to learn about how lifestyle factors can affect gene expression through epigenetic mechanisms. The nature of the genome and the epigenome, along with the science of genetics and epigenetics, are explored. The public's need for such a program is reviewed, especially in light of the prevalence of preventable, chronic diseases in American adults. The program is grounded in Carl Rogers' philosophy of unconditional positive regard, Aaron Antonovsky's Sense of Coherence model, Edward Deci and Richard Ryan's Self Determination Theory, and the healing power of unconditional love. A workshop and workbook form the backbone of the program. The workshop involves experiential activities based on scientific studies of epigenetic influences on gene expression. Activities include engagement with the epigenetic clock, the relaxation response, recreational music-making, and movement. The epigenetic connection between nutrition and gene expression is explored. There is an opportunity to update beliefs about the possibilities for changing gene expression, and there is a coaching component. The workbook provides written documentation of the workshop, questionnaires, room to develop personal preferences regarding workshop activities, and action plans for the future. The program involves no genetic testing or diagnoses. It is intended only to provide an enjoyable, whole-person learning experience that is culturally competent, inclusive, and completely voluntary. | |
