Abstract
The effects that stereotypes have on women who participate in a socially unacceptable sport was explored. Fourteen female ice hockey players ranging in age from twenty-six to forty were interviewed to determine what stereotypes are placed on women who play a sport generally deemed as inappropriate by society for them to participate in. Unstructured interviews were conducted to explore S stereotypes, individual effects and coping mechanisms used by the women. Findings suggest that depending on the individual and their athletic goals related to their sport, not only are the stereotypes placed on them different, but so are the effects that these stereotypes have on the women.
