Abstract

This study explored individualized coping techniques in highly stressful occupations. The six subjects were City of Richmond employees, primarily male African-Americans. The purpose was to discover and analyze the coping techniques subjects used to manage their stress. This study examined subjects who were assumed to be high level copers due to longevity on the job. Survey and phenomenological techniques were used in this descriptive study. The subjects underwent a lengthy interview, that included detailing a stressful work related event, and describing coping techniques that were utilized. Overall, subjects were considered high level copers in reference to the general population. Subjects were rated at three levels of coping with two subjects falling into each level. The distinctions of the levels were based on effectiveness of coping techniques. Commonly used coping techniques were use of leisure activities, avoidance, and therapy.
