Abstract

This master's project examines a new funding opportunity, venture philanthropy and its potential impact on the relationship between art museums and foundations. Venture philanthropy foundations have funded individual arts initiatives but, thus far, not art museums. It is my intention to uncover the potential for building relationships between venture philanthropy foundations and art museums in the United States. I hope to define and clearly articulate the circumstances under which additional funding may become available to museums. It is also my hope to discover if venture philanthropists' focus on institutional strengthening through organizational capacity building is viable for art museums. This project, by analyzing the potential effects of venture philanthropy on art museum funding, will provide a tool for museum leaders—including directors, development directors, and trustees in art museums—to use when deciding whether or not to establish relationships with venture philanthropy foundations.
