Abstract

My master's project examines community engagement and inclusivity created by community oral history programs and civic dialogue. In essence, community oral history programs can be seen as a dialogic approach to exhibit development, but in my project I have decided to break down the three major components that make the dialogic approach successful; oral history, civic dialogue, and community engagement. A dialogic approach can be defined as a community informed exhibit development; whether it be by discussing the major themes, curating objects, or adding their own oral history/personal narrative (Adair et al.,2011, p. 84). I explore these three components through my methodologies; literature review, two case studies and 10 interviews with museum professionals and oral historians.
