This literature review investigates the effectiveness of counselling via telehealth for children and youth with autism spectrum disorder during the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic and corresponding public health orders disproportionately affected the mental health of children and youth with autism and their families. Considering the limitations to in-person counselling, telehealth became a primary solution for this population. Common interventions have been adapted and applied remotely to continue care. Despite successful implementation, it is important to consider the risks and benefits of such a method as telehealth favors some groups while disadvantaging others. Implications for the counselling practice are suggested to identify the best practices to optimize the platform's effectiveness. Future research is an essential consideration as the literature contributes positively and negatively to the value of the technology and the population it seeks to serve. Recommendations for practice are provided as evidence to improve the experience of telehealth for professionals and clients alike.
