Abstract
The purpose of my study is to look at contemporary art institutions in metropolitan areas of the United States to investigate how they can better serve urban teens through after-school programs.2 Through a literature review, I researched the development and educational role of contemporary art organizations, issues facing today's urban teens, and the relationship between the two. I surveyed eighty metropolitan contemporary art institutions to examine the status of programs for urban teens. I also organized a focus group of teens involved in an after-school program to learn firsthand how the after-school program has benefited their lives. In addition, I conducted three case studies of institutions that are doing innovative after-school programs for the teen community.
