Abstract

The collection of the ecclesiastical textiles includes a wide selection from altar linens to processional copes. The examples represent the principal countries of Western Europe with a few pieces from Eastern Europe. The earliest centuries of the Church are not represented, as the majority of the collection dates from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries. This study is organized in two parts. Part One presents historical information on the development of ecclesiastical vestments and includes chapters devoted to the color, textiles, and mystic significance of vestments. Part Two is the catalogue of the de Young's collection. The major entries are arranged according to their country of origin and chronologically within each division. A glossary of general textile terms used throughout the two parts precedes the selected bibliography at the end of the catalogue.
