Abstract

This thesis/ art project is the story of a woman's quest to define herself, reveal her unique gift to this life, and claim her true name. This is a chapter account of a life journey, a diary entry of a year on the pilgrimage towards completion, towards Home. This is an adventure story of the Mythic Heroine's Quest, the cosmic task of self-completion. My thesis is that by journeying into places I call the Borderlands, personal/ mythic vision can be experienced, brought back, and made accessible through various art forms. Art-making is how I explore and record my journey discoveries. Information is stored in forms such as drawings, collage, poems, and music until it can be transmuted into wisdom, and lived. This thesis/ art project is a personal one about the process of how I create art. This wisdom is essential to the life of Earth. By embarking on this pilgrimage, both through literal travel and by symbolic expression, I learn about empowerment. I begin to build the mind/ body/ spirit/ environment support for the strong flow of life current in nself, those around me, and our world. I learn to be a designer and builder of bridges. I use art both for exploration, as through stream of consciousness writing, and to encode and document discoveries, as with photography. The story of Adventures in the Borderlands takes place in this context.
