The therapeutic use of scent has not previously been explored for promoting relaxation during trauma treatment with children. This paper sought to explore the potential for scent to be used for the relaxation component of TF-CBT. Through engagement with literature, six themes were identified and explored. These include: integration of novel interventions in trauma treatment practices, the notion that scent might help in meeting the goals of the relaxation component of TF-CBT, the notion that scent can be adapted to respond to diverse needs, the therapeutic potential of scent as evidenced in current therapeutic practices, the use of scent to promote culturally competent practice, and associative learning as a framework for understanding the link between scent and emotional changes. These themes were used to inform a discussion of the possibilities of how scent might be used to promote relaxation through the conceptualization and discussion of three hypothetical cases.
