Abstract

Several years ago : read a book that made me aware of the historical religious suppression of Women. It changed my outlook on religion, and sparked my current interest in supporting the feminist efforts to undo some of the apparent wrongdoings. This change in my viewpoint was refected,in my work. Sexual imagery became more important and was acccmçanied by a shift from realism to abstraction. That has now given way to a Neo-Primitive figurative style. Religion and myth enploy metaphorical events and figures to explain the cycles of life and seasons, to bring order out of the chaos of life and. nature, The personal metaphors and symbols I use in my work have evolved both from my dreams and from my feelings about being a woman. The women I portray are strong, capable, and sensual. Their hands reach out to give, teach, or support, not to hurt. My works are col.ags, drawings, and felt. They are built up of many layers. Even my drawings have other drawings underneath. Traces of these underlying layers bleed through giving the work a visual depth and mystery. I use color, texture, shape, scale, and contrast to create an emotional space. After I've finished a piece, I am almost like an arcaeologist. I go back into the piece to discover the myth I have created through the artistic struggle.
