Abstract

In this master's thesis, I explore the important role of social media as it is used as an effective, mission-driven, marketing tool for nonprofit organizations. My goal is to prove the importance of social media in museums with the hopes of them reaching broader online audiences. Social media is an umbrella term for peer-to-peer, user-generated communication that integrates technology, social interactions, and the construction of words, pictures, and audio. I believe my thesis topic addresses several important issues in the museum field, such as the ability to engage large online audiences through the use of effective marketing.
