Abstract
The goal of this thesis included learning about how San Francisco Bay Area museums were affected by the Loma Prieta earthquake and what, if any, emergency collection moves they performed. I wanted to research emergency preparedness and disaster planning, choosing off-site storage, planning for a collection move, and understanding the nature of earthquakes in order to present a set of recommendations that would combine elements of these multiple issues of collections management. The methodology section of this thesis describes my specific research model, which combines a literature review, interviews, and three comparative case studies. It also discusses the limitations of this thesis, and introduces my research instruments.
