Abstract

This project seeks to help children's museum professionals make more informed decisions about technology by exploring current theories, opinions and practices surrounding the use of computers in the field today. How, why and to what extent are children's museums using digital media in their exhibits? Do museum professionals believe these tools can be used to support developmentally appropriate practices within these environments, and if so, how? What constraints might inhibit children's museums from using technology in developmentally appropriate ways—financial resources, limited staff expertise, or something else? What can children's museum professionals learn from the use of computer technology within the wider educational community? It is hoped that this investigation will help clarify for children's museum professionals the key considerations germane to the fitness of computer technology for early learners in their own institutions.
