Abstract
This thesis explores the implications of direct experiences with a unified, universal field of awareness—nondual encounters—on the life of a therapist and the therapeutic process. The paper is the author‘s attempt to integrate her own yogic practice with her role as a clinical counselor. It also examines the possible relationship between nondual awareness and Rogers‘ core condition of unconditional positive regard. The paper is constructed as a sourcebook of Indian nondual ideas to support counselors who engage in meditation practices based in similar or complementary traditions. Results include constructive integration of the author‘s personal and professional practices. Findings showed a positive relationship between nondual understanding and the therapeutic process, primarily through the lowering of counselor reactivity, anxiety, and the enhancement of unconditional positive regard. The author cautions against the possible harmful effects of misconstruing concepts associated with nonduality on the therapeutic alliance, and calls for continued research.
