Abstract

The primary purpose of this study was to explore the experiences that athletes had with practicing yoga and how they perceived it was affecting their performance. This study utilized a qualitative research methodology of Content Analysis. A semi-structured interview was conducted with ten participants (eight tri-athletes and two tennis players), ages 16-58 years old. Eight of the participants were of Caucasian descent, one of Persian descent. Results showed positive perceived effects of practicing yoga on one's athletic performance. From a physical standpoint, yoga was reported to increase flexibility, strength, endurance and aid in injury prevention. Emotionally, practicing yoga was reported to quiet the mind, lessen anxiety, increase focus and induce a state of peace and relaxation. Final conclusions suggest incorporating a yoga practice into one's athletic training may positively affect their performance both physically and mentally.
