Abstract
What are the effects of the bar or bat mitzvah experience on a participant's self-esteem? Fifty Reform Jewish adolescents residing on the West Coast define self-esteem, describe the effect of their bar or bat mitzvah experience on their self-esteem, identify their primary instructor, and tell what effect that person had on their self-esteem. The hypothesis was that there was either a non-neutral effect on self-esteem was supported, with 84% of respondents showing positive or negative effects. A variety of guides, including cantors, tutors, rabbis, parents, and oneself were mentioned. Self-esteem was defined as feelings about oneself that usually involve accomplishment or self-confidence. The positive results of this study and the changing nature of adolescence suggest further research with an eye toward the development of educational programs and instructors that are attuned to promoting positive self-esteem in bar and bat mitzvah students.
