Abstract

This paper explores the thematic similarities and differences between employer and employee goals and values. In the related fields of organization development, retailing, employee motivation, and leadership styles, the theoretical bases for current business developments are cited that focus on the development and implementation of a variety of managerial approaches. Most of the preferred paradigms are primarily based upon perceptions of the business entities' needs from the employer and/or owner perspective. Although many leaders in the business development field are suggesting ways to access and respond to the employee's needs, this new employee-centered paradigm is infrequently applied and is limited to a few corporate experiments. This thesis suggests the necessity for such an application in the retail business milieu, and utilizes a qualitative study to generate in depth information as a result of employer and employee interviews based upon goals and values. The ensuing discussion offers recommendations for improvement in employer-employee communication including feedback loops, regular reviews, mutual goal setting, and encouraging the creation of a community-oriented workplace.
